Using the visual division app for equal groups

Division makes more sense when students can build the groups before reading the equation.

Division facts can be hard to remember when students have not built a clear meaning for the equation. Equal groups give students something concrete to point to before they practise facts.

The Daily Maths Review visual division app asks students to share counters into equal groups or make groups of a target size. The model then connects to sharing and group-size division equations.

Start with the model

Before students check an answer, ask them to name the total, the number of groups and how many counters are in each group. That language helps the equation become a record of the model rather than a symbol trick.

  • Use share into groups when the number of groups is known.
  • Use make groups of when the size of each group is known.
  • Ask students to move every counter before checking.
  • Keep the groups visible while students read the matching equation aloud.

Use errors as model evidence

Wrong checks are useful because they identify the model issue. Students may have counters left over, empty groups, unequal groups, the wrong number of groups or the wrong number in each group.

Quick classroom routine

Run one share-into-groups question together, ask students to read the model as total divided by groups, then switch to make-groups-of practice for two independent questions.

Move from model to fact practice

Once students can explain the model accurately, move to the division facts app for retrieval. If they start guessing again, return to the visual division app and rebuild the equal groups.
