Students can often recognise a cube or cone, but solid geometry becomes more useful when they can explain the features. They need to look at faces, edges, vertices and the way a net could fold into the solid.
The Daily Maths Review 3D objects and nets app gives that practice in short question sets. Teachers can choose object names, prism and pyramid classification, faces, edges and vertices, nets or mixed practice.
Start with the object name
Begin with name-objects questions when students are still building the vocabulary. Ask students to name the solid, then describe one feature that helped them decide.
- Use prism/pyramid questions when students are sorting solids by structure.
- Use faces, edges and vertices when students need careful feature counting.
- Use nets when students are ready to connect a flat layout with a solid.
- Use object filters when you want to focus on prisms, pyramids or curved solids.
Make the feature visible
A quick pause after each answer can turn the app from naming practice into reasoning practice. Ask students to point to a face, trace an edge, identify a vertex or describe why the object is a prism, pyramid or neither.
Run three name-objects questions, switch to faces/edges/vertices, then finish with one net question and ask students what solid the net can make.
Use errors to choose the next model
If students mix up prisms and pyramids, return to the shape of the matching faces. If faces, edges or vertices are miscounted, mark them one at a time. If nets are difficult, fold a paper or card model before returning to the app.
