Number riddles are useful because students cannot rely on one memorised procedure. They need to read each clue, hold several conditions in mind and test whether a possible number still fits.
The Daily Maths Review number riddles app gives students short detective-style cases. Teachers can choose place value, doubles and halves, operations, properties or mixed clue practice, then set the level.
Start by narrowing the possibilities
Before students answer, ask which clue gives the biggest restriction. A range clue, digit clue or property clue can reduce the list quickly, but students need to explain why that clue matters.
- Use place value clues when students need to organise digit information.
- Use doubles and halves when students are practising inverse thinking.
- Use operations clues when students can work backwards from a result.
- Use properties or mixed practice when students are ready to combine several clues.
Make students check every clue
A number can satisfy one clue and still be wrong. After students answer, ask them to read each clue back and confirm that the number passes every test.
Run three place-value riddles, pause to mark the clue that narrowed the list most, then switch to mixed practice.
Use answers to choose the next model
If students guess too early, model crossing out impossible numbers. If they miss a digit clue, return to place-value columns. If they miss a property clue, make a short candidate list before returning to the app.
