Number lines ask students to think about more than a label. They need to notice the start and end values, count the intervals, judge the spacing and decide where a number belongs.

Start with the scale
Before students answer, ask them to identify what each interval is worth. Many number line errors happen because students count tick marks without first reading the scale. Keep the first practice run focused on a familiar whole-number line if students are still building that habit.
- Ask what each jump is worth before students choose an answer.
- Use whole-number lines when the scale idea is new.
- Move to fractions and decimals once equal spacing is secure.
- Pause on mistakes and mark the intervals together.
Connect position to number sense
A number line is useful because it shows size and distance. If students place a value without checking whether it should be near the start, middle or end, pause and ask them to estimate first. This keeps the task about reasoning, not only counting ticks.
Run three whole-number lines, pause to discuss the interval, then switch to one fraction or decimal line using the same equal-spacing language.
Use answers to choose the next model
If students miss whole-number lines, return to counting intervals. If they miss fraction lines, rebuild the line with equal parts. If they miss decimal lines, connect the ticks to tenths or hundredths before increasing the challenge.
