Money questions ask students to combine number facts with a practical context. They need to read the price, recognise the money shown, compare amounts and sometimes subtract to find the difference or change.
The Daily Maths Review money app is designed for short Australian money practice with coins, notes, enough-money questions, how-much-more questions and change questions. It works best after students have handled or discussed the coins and notes first.
Start with the decision
Enough-money questions are a useful first step because students can reason about whether the shown amount covers the price. Ask students to say the price and the total money before choosing yes or no.
- Start with enough-money questions when students are learning to compare amounts.
- Move to how-much-more questions once students can identify the shortfall.
- Use change questions after modelling subtraction from the amount paid.
- Switch to mixed practice when students are ready to choose the operation.
Connect the app to hands-on money
If students guess from the answers, pause and rebuild the amount with real or printed money. The app gives quick repetition, but the value of coins and notes should still be visible and spoken.
Run three enough-money questions, pause to count the shown amount together, then switch to two change questions using the same price language.
Use answers to choose the next model
If students miss enough-money questions, return to counting coins and notes. If they miss how-much-more questions, model finding the difference. If they miss change questions, draw the paid amount, price and change as one subtraction story.
