Start with the attribute
Before students answer, ask what attribute is being measured. Length, mass, capacity, area, perimeter and volume need different thinking. Naming the attribute first helps students avoid treating every question as a plain number problem.

- Use mass and capacity when students need practice reading scales.
- Use area, perimeter and volume when students are connecting shapes to measures.
- Use conversions after students have discussed the relationship between units.
Keep the unit visible
Many measurement errors are unit errors. Students may know the number but lose whether it is millimetres, centimetres, metres, millilitres, litres, grams or kilograms. Keep the unit language spoken aloud, especially when moving into conversions.
Run three ruler questions, pause to name the unit and endpoint, then switch to one conversion set using the same measurement context.
Use answers to choose the next model
If students miss ruler questions, return to endpoints and tick marks. If they miss scale questions, model the interval. If they miss conversions, rebuild the relationship between the units before asking for more practice.
