Many maths mistakes start before the calculation. A student may know how to add, compare or measure, but still miss the word or symbol that tells them what the question is asking.

Start with the language students need today
Choose a category that matches the lesson rather than opening every word at once. Symbols can support equation reading. Measurement, time, fractions or data words can support a topic block.
- Use F-2, up to Y4, up to Y6 or all words to control the word set.
- Filter to symbols when students are misreading signs.
- Ask students to say the word, meaning and an example after checking.
- Open the glossary when students need the full example or reminder.
Treat wrong answers as reading evidence
When a student chooses the wrong meaning, pause before the next question. Ask which word or symbol they noticed first, then connect the correct meaning back to a familiar classroom example.
Run five symbol questions, ask students to read one correct meaning aloud, then use that symbol in a normal calculation question.
Move the words back into real questions
Vocabulary practice works best when it returns to normal maths. After a short app run, ask students to underline one important word or symbol in the next review question and explain what it tells them to do.
