Using the division app for inverse fact fluency

Division facts are easier to practise when students can connect each question back to a known multiplication fact.

Division facts can feel separate from multiplication when students only see them as new symbols. The link becomes clearer when students practise division as the matching reverse fact: if 6 times 4 is 24, then 24 divided by 6 is 4.

The Daily Maths Review division app keeps the practice clean by using whole-number answers. That makes it useful for retrieval practice after students have already met the related multiplication facts.

Start with the inverse link

Before students practise independently, model a few questions as fact families. Show the multiplication equation, then the matching division equation. This helps students see division as connected knowledge rather than a separate list to memorise.

  • Use the app after the matching times table has been taught.
  • Ask students to say the related multiplication fact for tricky questions.
  • Keep the first practice run short so students focus on accuracy.
  • Return to visual models if students are guessing rather than reasoning.

Use visual support when needed

If students are not ready for fact retrieval, pause and use equal groups, arrays or the visual division app first. A student who can see 24 shared into 6 equal groups is more likely to understand why the answer is 4.

Practise a short set of division facts, pause on one mistake, show the matching multiplication fact and equal groups, then continue with the same fact family.

Use answers to choose the next model

If most students miss the same divisor, revisit that times table. If errors are scattered, practise fact families. If students are accurate, keep the pace and connect the facts to later work with remainders and fractions.
