Spacing, retrieval and variation in primary maths

The learning science is useful when it becomes a simple classroom habit.

Students forget. That is not a weakness in the class or the teacher. It is part of how memory works. A daily review routine gives students repeated chances to bring an idea back before it has disappeared from working memory.

A topic practised once in a long block often feels fluent on the day and fragile a week later. Spacing spreads practice across days, so students have to rebuild the connection more than once.

Retrieval asks students to bring it back

Retrieval practice means students try to recall or reconstruct an answer before the method is shown again. It is different from re-reading a worked example. The small struggle is the point, as long as it is not overwhelming.

Variation helps students transfer

A student who only sees one number format may learn the example instead of the idea. Vary the numbers, representations and contexts. Keep the underlying skill stable while changing the surface features.

  • Ask the same skill with a different representation.
  • Move between symbols, words, diagrams and number lines.
  • Return to a skill after two days, then after a week.
  • Use mistakes to decide the next spaced review, not to label a student.
