Shape lessons are stronger when students can see and move the shapes they are discussing. A shared canvas lets the class test whether a shape name still fits after the shape is moved, resized or rotated.
The Daily Maths Review shapes tool lets teachers add common 2D shapes, change colour and size, drag them around the canvas, rotate selected shapes, duplicate them and tidy the workspace.
Start with shape names and features
Add a small set of shapes and ask students to name each one. Then ask what evidence they used: sides, corners, curved edges, equal sides or familiar visual features.
- Use triangles, squares and rectangles for early shape naming.
- Use pentagons, hexagons and octagons when students are counting sides.
- Use ovals and circles when students are discussing curved edges.
- Use colour or size changes when the lesson focus is sorting and comparing.
Rotate before asking again
Rotate a shape and ask whether its name changed. This short routine helps students separate the defining properties of a shape from its position on the screen.
Add a rectangle, triangle and hexagon, rotate each one, then ask students to justify the shape names using sides and corners.
Move from modelling to practice
After the class has discussed the shapes on the canvas, move into quadrilaterals practice or another geometry task. If students rely only on the way a shape is facing, return to the canvas and rotate the shape again.
