Pixel art turns a grid into something students want to describe. Each cell has a position, each colour choice affects the design, and the finished picture gives the class a shared object to discuss.

Start with rows and columns
Before using formal coordinates, ask students to describe a coloured cell by row and column. This helps them see that every square has a precise location.
- Use a 12 by 12 grid when students are new to position language.
- Paint one cell and ask students to describe where it is.
- Build a simple shape and ask which rows and columns it uses.
- Show coordinates when students are ready to name exact cell locations.
- Use a larger grid when students are ready for more detailed coordinate pictures.
Connect pictures to square units
A pixel picture is also an area model. Ask students how many cells are coloured, which colour covers the most space, or how a fill tool changes a connected area.
Paint a small letter or shape, ask students to name three cell positions, then use fill to change one area and count the coloured squares.
Use the design as evidence
After students create a picture, have them explain it using position and area language. The downloaded image can become a prompt for a later coordinate or pattern question.
