Before students solve change or how much more questions, spend time building and reading amounts. Ask students to count the value aloud and explain which coin or note they counted first.

Use mistakes to choose the next model
If students count all pieces as ones, return to naming the denomination first. If they can count a collection but struggle with change, build the amount paid and remove or compare the cost before writing the subtraction.
