Using the counters tool for arrays and equal groups

Counters help students see counting, combining, arrays and division before the symbols take over.

Counters are useful because students can see the maths move. They can count objects, combine sets, rearrange an array, or split a collection into equal groups before writing the equation.

The Daily Maths Review counters tool gives teachers a quick screen-based workspace for those models. It is not a scored app. It is a modelling tool for making the structure visible while the class talks.

Start with the model, then name the maths

When the idea is new, begin with counters before asking students to work only from symbols. Build the set, ask what they notice, then attach the equation after the structure is visible.

  • Use free counters for counting, addition and subtraction stories.
  • Use a ten frame when students need to see make-ten facts.
  • Use arrays before writing multiplication equations.
  • Use equal groups before division or sharing questions.

Make rearranging part of the discussion

A counter model is strongest when students can see that the same total can be organised in different ways. Move from a scattered collection to a ten frame, then to an array or equal groups, and ask what stayed the same.

Quick classroom routine

Build 12 counters, arrange them as a ten frame plus two, then turn the same 12 counters into a 3 by 4 array and four equal groups of three.

Use mistakes to choose the next representation

If students count one by one for every array, rebuild the rows and columns. If they struggle with division, make the equal groups first. If they lose the total after rearranging, pause and count the same collection in its new shape.
