Using the area tool for square units and perimeter

A visible grid helps students separate the space inside a shape from the boundary around it.

Area and perimeter are easier to discuss when students can see both parts of the shape. The square units inside the shape show area, while the outside edge shows perimeter.

The Daily Maths Review area tool gives teachers a screen-based grid for changing rectangle width and height, counting square units, reading perimeter, painting custom shapes and switching between grid sizes.

Start with rectangle dimensions

Begin with a rectangle that students can describe. Ask for the width and height first, then have students predict the number of square units before checking the area display.

  • Build a rectangle and read its width and height.
  • Count the rows and columns before using multiplication.
  • Change one dimension and ask what changed.
  • Compare the area count with the perimeter count.

Separate area from perimeter

Students often use the same strategy for both measures. Showing and hiding the perimeter edge helps them notice that area counts the inside squares, while perimeter counts the boundary units.

Quick classroom routine

Make a 4 by 3 rectangle, ask students for the area and perimeter, then change it to 5 by 3 and discuss which numbers changed and why.

Move from model to practice

Once students can explain what the grid is showing, move to measurement practice questions. If they confuse the two measures, return to the area tool and rebuild the shape square by square.
