Helping your child restart maths after a break

A gentle reset can rebuild confidence after holidays, illness or a busy family patch.

After a break, children may remember more than they can show straight away. The first goal is to make maths feel familiar again. Confidence usually returns faster when the restart is gentle.

Begin below the pressure point

Start with questions your child is likely to get right. This is not going backwards. It is warming up the memory pathway so harder questions feel possible again.

  • Choose a short review instead of a long catch-up session.
  • Use familiar skills for the first few days.
  • Add one challenge question only after the routine feels calm.
  • Celebrate the return to practice, not just the score.
Reset phrase

Try "we are just warming the skill back up" when your child feels rusty.
